Here’s the good news!

Posted in Thoughts on October 19, 2006 by Lydia
This week held the best AND the worst times all in a mere 3 days… sigh. let’s not talk about the bad bits.. but here’s the good news promised! :)
I waited a few days to keep some suspense… lol.
Here it comes…
Are you ready?
I AM GOING TO GLASGOW, SCOTLAND FOR 6 WHOLE WEEKS NEXT YEAR!!!
yes yes yes!! and I’m going with the flight back and forth and lodging all paid for!! Wheeee… I couldn’t ask for anything better than that! :D
I, yes, ME, the one and only Lydia Lee is the sole scholarship winner of a foundation to send medical students to University of Glasgow to undertake 6 good solid weeks immerse in the field of Surgery. :)
The dates have not been set yet.. therefore I do need to prepare a whole lot before I can be ready to go.. such as getting ready to live in icy cold weather :D muahaha. :P
God has truly been great – He blesses ALL the time, but sometimes He is super generous and gives extra more than what we deserve.. and this is really one of those times! Thank You God!! :D I completely recognize this as a gift from my Heavenly Father – can’t wait for more exciting things He’d give me.. I’m really all psyched up! :P

He blesses, no doubt about that

God is great! He blesses us with good things all the time, but sometimes, He’s extra generous and blesses us with things which are beyond our wildest imagination!! :) He did that for me today. I’m still so much at shock about it, with all the adrenaline pouring out. It’s amazing, beyond amazing. Thank You, God! :)
I’ll tell you more about it later ;)

My Observation about Blogs

Posted in Thoughts on October 16, 2006 by Lydia
Don’t know if everyone thinks the same (or rather does the same) but i’ve noticed that blogs are usually outlets for people to voice their feelings – the extremes of it, the best things that happened, the funniest things that happened and even the worst things that happens to them. I have been using some of my free time to browse many people’s blogs – both people I know and don’t know, and really, a lot of the entries I’ve seen have something to do with the negativity of the person at that moment of time in which the author writes.
See.. I think our media, particularly the newspaper has taught us oh-so-well to see the bad in everything – tragedies, death, natural disasters, that often at times, we too, see the horridness in everything – the lies, the hurt, the break-up, the pain and suffering. Many would exploit our good ol’ public (which means belongs to all) world wide web to just place the little tinge of "I’M HURTING HERE, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT" feelings, so that everybody reads it and whoever who has caused that pain (or thinks has caused the pain) would feel the guilt (though of course the author would have no intentions of pointing a finger at the culprit "SO and SO has caused me pain") I wonder why. What more, when the person feels that bit of guilt will then be EXPECTED to do something to mend it.. something like telling people to "read between the lines" of my feelings.
I think there are other places to voice that negative opinion than to taint our beautiful blogs with damaging thoughts, here’s a hint: If you have something bad to say about somebody, tell it straight to the person. Don’t announce it. it’s not nice.
lol. Great. I just created a negative thought today.

Life in our hands

Posted in Thoughts on October 12, 2006 by Lydia
"Just five more minutes…He might be revived after this round of shock…Please, sir, respond to us… if we give up now, it will be the last of you, if I released my hands now, nothing else can save you…"
You know.. I never really thought that could literally be in our hands, I mean, of course I know that in the healthcare profession, one can
diagnose wrongly, prescribe the wrong medication, resulting in the possible death of the patient at hand. I never really thought of it, until I came into this Emergency Medicine posting, where we’re exposed to cases fresh from the community – people from road traffic accidents, people who were poisoned, those had a heart attack or a stroke, people in real pain. Y’know the scenarios we watched on ER TV series oh-so-long ago, or when something terrible goes wrong with the patient in House? Yeah. You get the idea. All the tubes, the injections, the intubation, the defibrillation, CPR etc etc. (If only it was always that exciting in Seremban Hospital. lol, but that’s beside the point.)
But what really impacted me after a class this week was that the patient’s life was literally in our hands. It will be our choice whether we choose to try our utmost best to save him, or we choose to let him slip away, following the course of nature to his death. The moment we stop our resuscitation, it is like a sign to say, we’ve given up, there’s no hope to save him anymore. (For your information, the general idea would be to stop resuscitation after 30 minutes of failed attempts to revive the person. Imagine that, if you were in a situation where you’ll need to be resuscitated, I URGE you, please PLEASE try to wake up in 30 minutes, if you can, that is)
Suddenly the responsibility of a doctor in acute situations like these seem so overwhelming. Here, in my hands, lie a person’s future. My decision will take effect on this person’s life, this person’s family and friends. Wow. If this doesn’t shake you to the bone, here’s more…
I began to ponder more upon life, this very life we live, and then I realized that there is a far greater and important life which we should really really really pay attention to – life after death. The choice I make to stop ‘resuscitating’ people into knowing Christ can lead to that person’s death – a death so much worse than what I had described earlier, an eternal death, filled with pain, guilt and anguish. In our hands, as Christians, we are given the choice to save lives, or just let things be, allowing people to slip away, "following the course of nature to their deaths". Y’see, the point is not whether the person responds or not to the attempts, but whether we choose to attempt or not is what matters and the best thing about this ‘procedure’ is that there is no need for intubations, no need for ventilators, no need for 20 compressions to 2 breaths.. all we need to do is tell – "GO and TELL". That is all which is required of us, yet there is the complacency among us, and I am definitely not innocent of it. "How will they know if we do not tell?"
This very thought should shake you to the very core of your soul, if it doesn’t, I really don’t know what will.

Bleeding here, fracture there, pain everywhere

Posted in Thoughts on October 3, 2006 by Lydia
Emergency Medicine posting, after two days has looked rather unemergencyful. Maybe it’s still too early to pass a quick judgement on the posting, who knows, in the remaining eight days of the posting, I might come across something that feels like a real emergency, y’know ones that looks like a real TV show. Well, I did see a poor little girl who severed her finger after it got curious with the washing machine, and today there were many motor vehicle accident cases as a resultant of a wet Tuesday morning, but other than that, the A&E department looked rather quiet.. or maybe things that once looked interesting, didn’t quite look so interesting anymore. :P lol.
On the other hand, I can smell the haze coming back. Don’t know if it’s just Seremban or the same thing’s happening in KL too, but it looks like it’s getting from bad to worse. Quick! Somebody do the rain dance, before we all breathe in unhealthy air and die. lol. :)

International Music Festival

Posted in Music on October 2, 2006 by Lydia
There was an atmosphere of grandness in the room, the sounds of voices singing by the hundreds, in unison and in harmony. If I could only have one word to describe the Festival, this would be it: Incredible.
The music and lyrics sung by the Floridians really touched my heart, they were words of conviction and some songs were words of praise to our Almighty God. If you have not heart almost 200 voices singing… you missed your chance when you decided not to come. There is the unique resonance that fills the room, it could make goosebumps appear on your skin.
Of course, the experience of not just hearing the choir sing, but to actually be in the massive and all-powerful choir really humbled me. When everybody came together and sang with one purpose, under one guidance, with the mixture of adrenaline rush, you feel like you could sing and sing and sing practically forever.. and y’know what, that is exactly what heaven is going to be like. Everybody from every tribe, every tongue, every nation, singing with one purpose, that is to praise and worship our God, under the One who initiates our worship, we can just sing forever and ever and ever.. endlessly. I can’t wait for that to begin already! :)
Anyway, here are some pictures from the workshop and practices and the makan sessions after the concerts. I will upload the actual pictures of us singing when I get them. :P lol. Until then, enjoy these first. :)
