The insignificant me in the significant story

It was the evening of a fine day where this all took place. I was at home, eating and contemplating about life when something unusual happened. Two unknown men had the nerve to walk into my compound and take me away from my lovely rest.

I struggled to break free and thankfully Paps heard me.

“The Lord needs it.”

I stopped. The Lord needs me? The same Lord whose name has been whispered in the streets? The Lord whom I heard could make the blind see and the lame walk and even raised a dead man?

I hasten my steps. I couldn’t wait to meet him. I wondered how he would look like or how he talks. I wasn’t even thinking why he would need me, but I sure would do anything he needs me to!

I was led to the city gates and as it flung open I was immediately treated like a king! Much to my puzzlement, people lay their cloaks on the floor for me as some jumped and danced around me shouting with joy. I couldn’t understand why but I was definitely enjoying the attention. A little creature like me barely gets noticed in the marketplace. So I walked proudly with my chin up and gave my best stance.

It wasn’t long before I started to gloat about my own achievements. This must be a reward from the Lord for the hard work I’ve done for Paps. Day in and out from sunrise until sunset, it’s all been work work work. I deserved this. Let me enjoy the praises of this people.

Until I realized…

It wasn’t me they were cheering for. All this time, I was carrying the Lord. I couldn’t even feel his weight. I’ve never met anyone so gentle and loving. He didn’t speak much. You could tell that he had a lot going on in his mind.

My steps changed. I did not deserve these praises but this Lord does. This was why I was needed. For the fulfilment of a prophecy and I was chosen. I bowed my head and walked on with humility. Of all he could’ve picked, he chose me and I did nothing to deserve this.

We carried on for a few more miles. Children came by and gleefully touched him. Some gave me a pat too. I hear cries of “Hosanna” everywhere, which means “Save!”. What do they need to be saved from, I pondered.

The Lord brushed my hair as we approached the end of the road. I knelt down in reverence of him as it was truly an honour to be a small part of his journey.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

I watched him walk away as he looked over the city he had just entered. I was quite sure I saw a teardrop fall.

9As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30“Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him,
‘The Lord needs it.’ “
32Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”34They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

35They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.37When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”[a]
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”40“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

41As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. 44They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”

Your Grace Still Amazes Me (by Shawn Craig and Connie Harrington)
My faithful Father, enduring Friend
Your tender mercy’s like a river with no end
It overwhelms me, covers my sin
Each time I come into Your presence
I stand in wonder once again

Your grace still amazes me
Your love is still a mystery
Each day I fall on my knees
Your grace still amazes me
‘Cause Your grace still amazes me

Oh, patient Saviour, You make me whole
You are the Author and the Healer of my soul
What can I give You, Lord, what can I say
I know there’s no way to repay You
Only to offer You my praise

It’s deeper, it’s wider
It’s stronger, it’s higher
It’s deeper it’s wider
It’s stronger, it’s higher
than anything my eyes can see
